So, growing up my Dad was a volunteer firefighter for the Charlottesville Fire Dept, and only once did I witness a brush fire...oddly enough it occured on our property across the street. Well, the past four days I have seen enough smoke and ash to prove to me that "brush" fires are no joke.In the Gila Indian Reservation of Phoenix, actually near the Phoenix International Raceway, there is a 1,200 acre fire burning. We live in Awhatukee, and it is a solid 45 minute drive to reach that part of Phoenix, but seeing as the desert is flat outside of the mountains, it feels like it is right over South Mountain. South Mountain separates West Phoenix and Downtown from South/East Phoenix. But the smoke and ash from the jump in strength yesterday was enough to keep my attention! Here is a map to give you an idea of Phoenix, the fire indicates where it is.
It is just crazy that we are experiencing this...it makes it a lot more real when it isn't so far away!By the way, they call it the Ethan Fire - do you think it is the fact that they name them like hurricanes in the Atlantic?
